Scholarship is a form of financial aid that is granted from the government, educational institution, and private corporate firms to help students pursue their studies even in the absence of adequate funds. These scholarships are granted on the basis of merit not need.

Similarly an athletic scholarship provides an aid to a student to attend a college and pursue his studies. This scholarship is predominantly awarded to those students who have performed exceptionally well in any particular sport. There are various types of popular athletic scholarships and are especially common in the United States of America. These athletic scholarships are restricted or are illegal in most of the countries.

There are three organizations in the world today that offer athletic or sports scholarships to students worldwide namely National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Students have to fulfill certain parameters and standards set by that organization or government or universities or colleges. These three renowned organizations are known for providing most popular athletic scholarships in the world.

NCAA is also responsible for setting the parameters and standards that each student must fulfill to be eligible for the scholarship. GPA and tests conducted by these organizations act as a parameter for ascertaining the capabilities of the student. The rules have to be very stringent as this is an investment.

NCAA is a voluntary organization and most of the colleges, their athletic events and the rules that guide them are formulated by it. They confer popular athletic scholarships if the student applicant has performed exceptionally well in any sport like tennis, hockey, soccer, football, swimming, skiing, volley ball, wrestling and baseball.

There are more than 600 colleges all over the United States of America which offer popular athletic scholarships. There are several websites which keep us well informed about the changes in the rules and standards of these organizations. They offer a platform to showcase and market the talent of the student. Being capable and skill is just not enough to be noticed.

In the United States of America, popular athletic scholarships are offered in 29 different sports so that the student can finance his studies and pursue his interest at the same time. Till 1980s there were no athletic scholarships for women. USA sanctions the license to play only if the candidate is between the ages of 18 to 24. Therefore the best time to avail these popular athletic scholarships is during graduation or after high school. It is good to apply for them as early as possible. They analyze the complete track record with the profile of the candidates. They closely study his strengths, weaknesses, skills, success, competitiveness and performance. To avoid rejection for such popular athletic scholarships, candidates must prepare a very impressive and detailed because the information furnished in the application for is used to study the background of candidate’s athletic potential. Apart from that the student has to take up TOEFL and SAT to be accepted by any university in United States of America.

Article by Douglas Scott

Oftentimes, the asthma medication prescribed after an asthma attack will contain legal steroids that may be banned by an athlete’s sports organization. That is why athletes with asthma who have recently suffered an asthma attack need to be aware of the medicine that will be prescribed them in an effort to recover from the attack. These steroidal prescriptions are often fine to use for athletes if they are given permission by their school, organization, or league. However, sometimes the athletes aren’t aware that their prescription will contain steroids that may be banned, so they don’t know to ask for permission to use the medicine.

It may seem odd to present this warning, since people having asthma attacks aren’t usually athletes, or if they are athletes, they would probably have to wait some time before resuming their practices after an asthma attack. Attacks can often be caused by an outside element, like allergies or being around too much second-hand smoke. In cases like those, the attack is a short-term nuisance that will not prevent athletes from quickly resuming their training with approval from a doctor who has assessed the level of danger for a reoccurrence of an attack. In those instances, when taking asthma prescriptions with steroids, the athlete is more likely to test positive for a banned substance.

This can be avoided in a few different ways. Make sure coaches and athletic directors are aware that the athlete has asthma, thus necessitating the occasional treatment of prescription drugs to treat the disease. This is a good idea, even without the danger of accidentally taking a banned steroid, since coaches and the staff need to know what to do in case of an asthma attack. Coaches and administrative personnel can reach out to league officials to make them aware of athletes with asthma, which will lay the foundation for later if the athlete has to take an asthma steroid to recover from an episode. League officials will already be aware of the disease in the athlete and might be able to make a quick ruling on the steroidal prescription. The athlete can also make the prescribing doctor aware of their athletic situation and possibly request a medication that won’t violate their league’s rules. This can often be done if the asthma attack was a one-off occurrence that isn’t likely to happen again and if the damage from the attack wasn’t very severe.

In addition to taking the normal precautions to prevent asthma attacks, the asthmatic should also get a yearly flu shot, since people with asthma are at a greater risk of danger because of symptoms normally association with the flu triggering asthma symptoms.

An athlete who has had asthma attacks in the past can request approval ahead of time – possibly before the season starts – in case they later need to take a potentially banned substance. Daily or regularly used asthma medications, such as Albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), Singulair, Pirbuterol, etc., do not have steroids and can safely be used without fear of violating league rules on banned substances.

Article by Toan Dinh

Statistics show that of the more than 3.5 million kids [ages 14 and up] who are injured while playing sports and recreational activities each year, those with the highest rates of injury are young people who are part of a contact sport. It’s hardly surprising… As any athlete who has played soccer, football, hockey, rugby or another contact sport knows, one hit can have lasting effects. The head spins, the feet go weak, the heart races… and, unfortunately, serious damage can even take place.

While death from a contact sport injury is considered rare [though it does happen and is always tragic], the other possible medical problems related to intense contact are still quite significant. Brain damage, concussions, head trauma, loss of teeth, loss of sensation in parts of the body and broken bones are but a few of the potential disasters waiting to happen. However, this doesn’t mean that parents should shield their children and teens from playing sports, as athletic activity is highly recommended. [After all, team sports teach kids how to get along with others, how to maintain self-discipline and how to stay fit.] What the reality of potential sports injuries does mean is that moms and dads [and coaches] should mandate that their children wear athletic mouth guards whenever the sport is being played, even during practices.

Athletic mouth guards are not new products; they’ve been available to recreational and professional athletes for numerous years. Generally, though, they are assumed to only provide a “safety net” for the teeth, gums and tongue. What most people do not realize is that an athletic mouth guard can actually be a life saver.

For instance, when an athlete not wearing an athletic mouth guard sustains any kind of blow to the mouth or jaw area, the reverberations from that blow can travel throughout the skull, interfering with the functions of the brain. This happens even when the blow is relatively light. Those reverberations can cause trauma to the brain, possibly leading to anything from concussions to death. On the other hand, when an athlete wears an athletic mouth guard that has been specially-designed to absorb the majority of the force to the mouth or jaw, the potential for damage to the brain is greatly lessened. This is the reason many professional athletes [almost all of whom wear athletic mouth guards] can recover so quickly from intense contact without losing consciousness or being forced off the playing field.

If you’re the parent of a child who plays a contact sport, it is essential that you invest in a state-of-the-art athletic mouth guard. Don’t simply rely on those that you see on the drugstore or grocery store shelves. Investigate to determine which athletic mouth guards have been strategically engineered to ensure the safety of the wearer. Otherwise, you could be playing a tenuous game of “Russian Roulette” with your son or daughter’s life.

Article by Jay Sing

Athletes foot is a frequent skin infection formally identified as Tinea Pedis, which thrives in environments high in dampness, warm, and moisture filled. The mold that will cause athletes foot is set up on exteriors often connected with sports such locker room floors and other surfaces within locker quarters and is why the fungal condition is given the moniker Athletes Foot. Even though commonly connected with locker rooms and athletics amenities, the mildew is also located in bathrooms and locations around swimming pools, with dampness and heat being the key reason, providing the ultimate growing environment for the fungus. Since athletes foot is so frequent, it stands to reason why people hunt natural remedies for athletes foot.

Athletes foot is unpleasant and annoying to the point it can be unbearable. The fungus creates severe itching and a burning feeling between and about the toes. As it develops the fungus presents in blisters and cracking resulting in peeling skin. Athletes foot is a extremely quick emergent fungus and once infected, the condition progress rapidly. People such as athletes who utilize their bodies in sports functions generally have no option but to put on socks exasperating the condition, establishing the ideal setting for athletes foot. Motion coupled with socks and shoes cause the feet to perspire, setting up the environment in which the fungus will become prolific.

To foster odds of not becoming infected with athletes foot, there are simple actions that can be carried out. Open styles of boots or shoes such as shower shoes or flip flops should constantly be worn when in locker rooms or other communal shower and bathroom facilities to decrease skin to floor contact, helping in reducing the likelihood of coming in contact with the fungus. Removing wetness is fundamental to minimizing probability of contracting athletes foot. By focusing on toweling off between each toe when exiting from the shower or pool, many can further eradicate our likelihood of acquiring athletes foot.

Footwear, mainly socks will make up a huge difference. One hundred percent cotton socks can amplify the chances of generating a humidity filled atmosphere about the foot as all cotton socks trigger the foot to perspire, which is the atmosphere the fungus thrives. By utilizing footwear containing synthetics, feet stay cooler and are less likely to perspire, additionally reducing the odds of sweating about the feet.

Athletes foot is very contagious so be careful and keep away from walking about with no shoes in civic places and abstain from dressing in other peoples shoes. Nevertheless, as transmittable as it may be, some people are more immune to the infection than other people just as some people are more prone to catching a cold than other people. Whatever the case may be in your circumstances, it is best to be precautious and be conscious the likelihood exist for you to get Athletes foot if you go into spots where the setting is ripe for the condition.

With the athletics season almost at a close, the athletes of the world could be forgiven for taking a rest. However it’s not just on the track and field that athletes find themselves competing against each other all year round. Every year a select few athletes are awarded gongs for their achievements in their sport. The IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) hold their prestigious World Athletics Gala annually, which rewards outstanding global athletic achievements, through a number of awards.

The highlight of this event is the announcement of the Male and Female World Athletes of the Year. This year the IAAF has given the public the unique chance of helping to select the three finalists for both the Female & Male Athlete of the Year 2010. Great Britain only has one contender and that is World heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis. The 24 year old won the world indoor pentathlon and heptathlon gold at the European Championships this year.

Jessica Ennis was also shortlisted for the Female European Athlete of the Year. These awards have already been announced, with Jessica coming second behind Blanka Vlasic, a high jumper from Croatia (who she also happens to be up against for the World Athlete award). French sprinter Christophe Lemaitre was named European Male Athlete of the Year.

Other Award ceremonies taking place are the Aviva Athletics Awards. These will be held at Loughborough University, which itself is a nationally and internationally recognised for its high level of teaching and research in the sport and exercise sciences.

Young emerging talent also gets a nod. The European Athletics Rising Star Awards recognises the future male and female stars in the world of European athletics. It has proved to be a good indicator as Jessica Ennis won the title back in 2007. This year saw French triple jumper Teddy Tamgho and Croatian discus thrower Sandra Perkovic take the honours, so they will be two to watch out for in the coming seasons.

On the whole, it’s been a fairly good year for British athletics. Great Britain & N.I’s medal haul included 41 medals at the Commonwealth Games, 19 medals at the European Championships and 4 medals at the IAAF World Indoor Championships. So with less than 2 years to go until the curtain goes up on the 2012 Olympics, things look to be on track for our Britain & N.I athletes….let’s just hope the construction of all the venues are too!

Article by Gen Wright

You can recognize them as they enter the field from their green, gold and white colors. Although the name of the Oakland Athletics has gone through some changes, the team colors have not. At the start, this team was known as the Philadelphia Athletics and was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1901. This was very early in the formation of major league baseball and the movement of this team reflects how there were various wrinkles that would need to be ironed out before things were settled. In 1995, the Philadelphia Athletics moved to Kansas City and became known as the Kansas City Athletics.

The next move and name change was under less than favorable circumstances but in 1968, the team packed up and moved to Oakland, California. They were known from 1968 until 1969 as the Oakland A’s. In 1981, the team name changed to the Oakland Athletics and has remained the same since. The ballpark scenario mirrors the name changes for the Oakland Athletics, who played in Columbia Park from 1901 to 1908. In 1909, they took Shibe Park as their home but this venue was also known as Connie Mack Stadium from 1953 to 1954. In 1955, their home was Municipal Stadium in Kansas City where they would play all of their home games until 1967. Their current home is Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum which has also been known as Network Associates Coliseum from 1998 to 2004 and as McAfee Coliseum from 2004 to 2008.

When it comes to major league titles, no matter what name the team may have had at the time, they have amassed more titles than many teams can even imagine. With nine World Series titles earned in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, 1930, 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1989; the actions speak louder than words. Between 1902 and 1990, the Oakland Athletics won an amazing 15 American League Pennant titles. From 1971 to 2006, the Oakland Athletics earned 14 West Division titles. The team also has a Wild Card berth to the credit, earned in 2001.

It may come as no surprised that some of the most widely spread rivals of the Oakland Athletics come from locations where the team moved from, including the Philadelphia Phillies. Other rivals of note are the San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. With so many names and locations to their past, the Oakland Athletics Hall of Famers includes members from the Philadelphia Athletics, Kansas City Athletics and Oakland Athletics. Oakland Athletics inductees include Orlando Cepeda, Rollie Fingers, Catfish Hunter, Willie McCovey, Billy Williams, Dennis Eckersley, Goose Gossage, Reggie Jackson, Joe Morgan, Dick Williams, Rickey Henderson and Don Sutton. If progress is measured by changing locations names and gaining titles, the Oakland Athletics are certainly on the right track.

Opened in 1966, Oakland-Alamada Coliseum is located at 7000 Coliseum Way in Oakland, California. The playing surface is bluegrass and the venue has a seating capacity of 35,067 for baseball even, 47,416 for soccer games and 63,026 for football gatherings. Other tenants of the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum include the Oakland Raiders who played another venue for a few years but returned in 1995. In 1996, the coliseum was expanded to include 10,000 seats in the upper deck. The steep height, however, is criticized by many baseball fans as causing the stadium to look more like a football field than a baseball site.

Another renovation that further reduced seating in 2006 was the covering of the third deck with a tarp. Although this limited the number of seats reduced the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum to the smallest in the major leagues, it created an opportunity for low priced seating known as the “Value Deck” with all seats in the area below .

			    About the Author

There are plenty of great seats left to this season and Ticket America has your Oakland Athletics tickets. Enjoy the roar of the crowd and action on the field at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Athletes often experience stress during games or competitions, which in turn compromises their physical performance. These negative thoughts can cause athletes to “choke” even if they would otherwise have a high performance level. This common form of anxiety that occurs before or during play time can have a devastating effect on athletic performance. This is where the relatively new practice of sports psychology comes in to play.

Our bodies are programmed with the fight or flight response, which takes action in an athletic setting when the player is afraid of losing or performing poorly. The way to override this fight or flight response is not with more practice, but with mental conditioning. Practicing is good for improving upon a skill, but when an athlete experiences performance anxiety, their skill level usually isn’t the cause of the problem. The problem lies in the mental aspect of the game, so mental conditioning and relaxation techniques are more likely to solve the issue than traditional practice.

Professional sports players are often criticized when they do not perform at their best all the time; they are expected to be machines. Behind the scenes, many pro athletes suffer from anxiety. Dontrelle Willis, of the Detroit Tigers, missed the first six weeks of the 2009 season due to an anxiety disorder. Khalil Greene of the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to be placed on the disabled list for 15 days due to anxiety. Boxer Mike Tyson has admitted to suffering from chronic depression, most likely from the pressures of his sport. Anxiety and other mental disorders are not uncommon in professional sports, but most athletes do not talk about these problems in the public light.

Sports stars often hire sports psychologists to help them with common anxiety problems. Most of the time, the athletes simply work to develop their self confidence and mental strength before and during a game.Sports psychologists help athletes learn coping skills so they can look at the game in a new light.

The first mistake that some sports players make is to overthink their performance. This causes them to dwell on potentially disastrous outcomes, which in turn leads to severe performance anxiety as they try to fight their negative thoughts. Sports psychology professionals work with athletes that have these problems and help to train their brain to be supportive, not destructive, during sporting activities. There are a few common methods that sports psychologists use to promote good mental practice.

The first method to reducing performance anxiety is learning relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation or diaphragmatic breathing. Practicing these techniques reduces the physical response to anxiety, such as tense muscles, shallow breathing or a skyrocketing heart rate. All of these effects on the body can lead to a poor performance on the field, so keeping them under control is important for success. The techniques can be practiced weeks, days and hours before a competition to ensure nerves will be kept at bay.

Another way sports psychologists reduce anxiety in athletes is through cognitive restructuring. Cognitive restructuring is the process of changing habits, and it is especially helpful to athletes in this situation. The process of changing habitual thinking helps athletes channel adrenaline and pressure into excitement and motivation instead of worry. The athletes that have mastered this are able to rise to the challenge time after time without fail.

Although these strategies can be practiced alone, people often lack the discipline and motivation to coach themselves in this issue. Sports psychologists specialize in helping athletes of every skill level overcome their anxiety problems and perform to the best of their ability every time they play.

Article by Rachael Cleipher

There is no better way to spend an afternoon than by taking on a few friends in a game of pickup basketball or by shooting a round of golf. Who doesn’t love to have time to play a game of pool or to go for a jog? No matter if the sport is being played for fun or for something a little more serious, most people love athletics. There is something about athletics that gets people excited, brings them together for a common cause, and keeps them healthier all at the same time.

Maybe people enjoy athletics so much because there are tons of role models to look to in any sport. An aspiring tennis player can look to collegiate or professional tennis players and be inspired to keep working on their serve. A little boy who loves all kinds of athletics can find a hero in any sport he enjoys. We love athletics because our culture loves and fames athletes. We love to watch athletics live or even on television any chance we get because we just cannot get enough of it.

Few things can bring more excitement to a room full of men than exciting athletics. Many men even love to bet against each other on the outcomes of big games in many sports. Even if they do not have the excitement of playing athletics themselves, people surely get a high off of watching others do athletics well. And that is a great thing about athletics: you do not have to be good at them to enjoy them. Anyone can get just as much enjoyment out of athletics.

There are some people, however, for whom watching athletics on television or even live is not enough. Their love for certain sports pulls them, requires them even, to participate in athletics themselves. They must exert physical and mental energy and try to conquer a sport on their own. They get no bigger thrill than to find success in a local basketball league or in a raquetball competition. Sure, winning is great, but playing and competing is enough for many.

Those who choose to take their love of the game beyond the television set to a local gym or an outdoor court are doing themselves a favor. While enjoying the athletics they love, these people are actually staying in shape and doing great things for their personal health. And perhaps that is the best part about athletics: you can love them, participate in them, and care about the health of your body all at once. If only everyone could love athletics enough to pick up a sport or two themselves.

This article lists the best lines of attack against athlete’s foot, which despite its name is (often) nothing to do with exercise. It is a fungal infection that if left unchecked is often very irritating and can spread to other parts of the body. It needs to be treated systematically if it is not to infect entire household or sports team.

1. “Topical” treatment. It is normally possible to treat athlete’s foot fast by selecting two drugs from the local drug store and applying them to the affected areas (this is known as topical treatment). These two drugs should never be applied at the same time because mixing drugs could have bad side effects. The idea is that once the first treatment has been used up the patient waits a week, and then, whether or not the first course of treatment has succeeded in curing the athlete’s’ foot symptoms, the new treatment will either adopt a new line of attack or prevent re-infection.

2. Prevention. The best treatment for athlete’s foot is to stop it becoming established in the first place. This means that at the first sign of athlete’s foot, whoever is infected should be sure to wash his of her feet separately, use separate towels to dry the feet, and not walk around barefoot in the home of sports hall.

3. Look for a gel as well as an ointment. Most off the shelf athlete’s foot treatments are in ointment form, which is quite convenient. But at least one of the two treatments recommended in point 1 should be in gel form, rather than an ointment, because gels have a better chance of not allowing moisture around the toes to develop and therefore nurture the athlete’s foot spores, instead of attacking them.

4. Use an athlete’s foot powder. When using ointments and gels to handle athlete’s bottom it is also indispensable to use a powder to interrupt the build up of harmful dampness. Instead of leave a trail of athlete’s foot powder all over the house, be certain to put this powder into your shoes, socks and bedroom slippers, and only shake it between your toes once you are sure you are not about to go around barefoot. Most makers of athlete’s foot ointments and gels supply a powder with the same active ingredients as their ointments and gels so a coordinated treatment of athlete’s foot must be sure to use the same get on to of powder as ointment or gel.

4. Stay persistent. The treatment recommended here will normally mean the infection disappears inside about four to six weeks. If it has not done so then it will be necessary to carry on with this for at least another month. Even when the feet are apparently free of athlete’s foot the spores may still be around to re-infect the patient so at the very least me sure to use up all your supply of powder to stop athlete’s foot coming back.

5. Bad cases of athlete’s foot. In most cases athlete’s foot can be treated without the involvement of doctors, podiatrists, or other medics. In severe cases a prescription may be needed to obtain a stronger medicine. Even in such cases systematic treatment to prevent wider infection of a household or re-infections of the origin patient will still be needed.
